Dry eye in patients with congenital insensitivity to pain and anhydrosis

Hello!

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), also called hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, is an extremely rare inherited disorder characterized by the inability to feel pain and temperature, and decreased or absent sweating (anhidrosis).

We have reported that superficial punctate keratopathy and dry eye was observed in most cases of CIPA, and that the loss of corneal nerves contributed to impairment of corneal sensation in patients with CIPA.

Dr. Shirakawa, doctors from the University of Tokyo Hospital, and I went to conduct an ophthalmological checkup for patients with CIPA in the Annual Symposium of “Tomorrow,” the Japan Association of Patients with CIPA on October.
