Marathon and Eye

I attended full-marathon at Fukuoka City on November 12, 2017. It was my first time to challenge full-marathon. The result was … not good, but it was the first step for full-marathon.

The next day, I felt leg pain on my left knee. In addition, I felt sore eye on right eye…So I searched literature relating marathon and dry eye.

Eye injuries in the extreme environment ultra-marathon runner. Cope TA and  Kropelnicki A. BMJ Case Rep. 2015-210432.

This patient was an ultra runner who runs for 7 days. He complained sore eye and visual disturbance on his left eye. He attended the ultra marathon in England under very cold condition without goggle. The image showed the corneal stromal edema on his let eye. The authors concluded that he run without goggle in very cold condition thus “corneal freezing” was occurred on his let eye.

Marathon runner’s retinopathy. Labriola LT, et al. Semin Ophthalmol. 247-50, 2009

This report demonstrated that a young marathon runner showed an acute retinal hemorrhage. The authors speculated that embolism may be easily formed when the runners train. This patient was 25 y-o female, thus it may be happened to me (almost 50 y-o male)….

Marathon may not affect to the tear condition when the runners prepare adequately. The diagnosis of my right eye was not dry eye but my imagination. I cannot attend full-marathon this season. Marathon does not cause dry eye, thus trying full-marathons is not problem!
